Why This Matters

The Virginia General Assembly is rushing through HB 6 and SB 596, bills that would enshrine an unrestricted “right” to contraception in state law – with NO age limits and NO requirement for parental consent or notification.
  • This means minors of any age could access birth control pills, IUDs, implants, injections, and emergency contraception without their parents ever knowing.
  • It overrides parental authority and removes families from critical health decisions involving their children.
  • Virginia already allows minors to access contraception under current law – this bill goes further by locking it into statute, making it nearly impossible to add common-sense parental protections in the future.
SB 596 has already PASSED the Senate (21-15, with limited bipartisan support) and is now in the House of Delegates, where it could be voted on in the coming days or weeks. If it passes the House, it heads straight to Governor Abigail Spanberger, who is likely to sign it.We cannot let this happen without a fight. Parental rights are on the line.
